Customer Challenge:

Scarcity of Suppliers

Mastering Detachable Backplane Design

Against this backdrop, detachable backplanes allow precise matching of PCB materials with different costs and performance based on signal speed. The customer in this case had such a need. However, suppliers capable of mastering detachable backplane design technology and ensuring stable signal transmission are extremely rare. This led to customer concerns about the transmission stability of detachable backplanes in data center systems. Therefore, finding a partner with both technical expertise and reliability was especially important for them.

▲ Impel Plus Backplane Solution

Molex:

Industry Leader in Detachable Backplane Design

Molex is such a partner. With our extensive modular experience, we offer industry-leading detachable backplane designs, such as the Impel, Impel Plus, and Impact series products, capable of meeting transmission needs from 10G to 56G, with forward and backward compatibility, providing strong support for future system performance upgrades. Our multiple pitch options, combined with efficient signal traces, enable customers to flexibly design PCB layouts and reduce costs.

01. Impel/Impel Plus

Backplane Connectors

The Impel backplane interconnect system occupies minimal space, allowing customers to achieve data transfer rates of up to 40 Gbps without completely redesigning the architecture or replacing existing data center hardware, while meeting industry requirements for mechanical density.

The Impel Plus backplane connector system achieves data transfer rates of up to 56 Gbps, while providing optimal signal integrity through ground tail aligners (which minimize impedance discontinuities and reduce crosstalk). Additionally, the innovative signal interface reduces insertion loss compared to direct-plug signal beam interfaces, with frequencies exceeding 30 GHz.

Prototyping cable assemblies requires tools, which can result in significant costs. The Impel and Impel Plus backplane cable assemblies address tooling startup costs by providing complete assemblies.
