Date2024-12-09
  • The urgent demand for improved vehicle performance and efficiency is driving innovation and investment in 48V technology
  • Emerging power standards are expected to advance automotive functionalities, including turbocharging, regenerative braking, infotainment systems, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)
  • To accelerate the adoption of 48V technology and reduce its cost and complexity, modular design, agile development methods, and industry collaboration are essential

Molex has released a report exploring the rapid rise of 48V electrical system technology, which is poised to significantly enhance vehicle performance, efficiency, functionality, and comfort. The Molex report, titled "Reimagining the Future of Automotive: Introducing 48V Power Systems", examines the momentum of 48V technology and provides practical recommendations for automakers and product design engineers to address the opportunities and challenges of transitioning from traditional 12V electrical systems to 48V systems.

Scott Whicker, Senior Vice President and President of Molex’s Connected Mobility Solutions Division, stated:

“The potential of 48V technology is vast, but achieving this requires industry-wide collaboration to overcome technical barriers and establish standards. We are working hand-in-hand with partners across the automotive ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of 48V technology. Together, we can optimize system integration, reduce development costs, speed up the time-to-market for power system components and connectivity solutions, and ensure reliable and efficient power delivery.”

Unlocking New Vehicle Capabilities

The 48V technology significantly enhances vehicle performance and functionality by quadrupling system voltage. These improvements include electric turbocharging, regenerative braking, infotainment systems, and pre-conditioning for auxiliary battery charging. 48V systems not only improve the efficiency of electric components but also enable more responsive climate control, superior steering responsiveness, and precise engine temperature management. Additionally, the system enhances the power efficiency of critical sensors, actuators, and control units, supporting advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and paving the way for fully autonomous driving.
The multifunctional 48V system is suitable for both traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles. Molex’s report highlights the significant profitability growth potential of 48V systems in the current and future automotive markets and emphasizes the need for modular 48V platforms. These platforms feature flexible architectures that can be customized based on vehicle size, type, and power requirements.

However, the high voltage levels of 48V systems may lead to increased electromagnetic interference (EMI), making shielding more challenging compared to low-voltage systems. Additionally, wiring and harness design are critical, as higher currents and voltages bring challenges related to weight, space, and cost.
