New IHPT Haptic Feedback Actuators
  • Cost and space-saving devices with a force of up to 120 N

  • Rated operating voltage as low as 12 V (8 V to 16 V)

  • Delivers high-resolution haptic effects for automotive and commercial applications

Vishay has announced the addition of five new devices in various sizes and force levels to expand its IHPT haptic feedback actuator product line, which utilizes solenoid-based technology (licensed from Immersion Corporation). Vishay Custom Magnetics actuators operate at 12 V and are designed for automotive and commercial human-machine interface (HMI) LCD displays, touchscreens, touch switches, and button control panels. They feature high pulse and vibration capabilities, providing clear high-definition (HD) haptic feedback.

The newly released devices come in four form factors ranging from 29 mm x 21 mm to 44 mm x 37 mm, with variable force outputs of up to 120 N. They feature a compact two-piece design with mounting holes for easy installation and direct operation. The actuators have a fast response time of 5 ms and, combined with high mechanical force, can produce high-resolution haptic effects. Operating voltage ranges from 8 V to 16 V. IHPT actuators are ideal for noisy and harsh environments where audio signals are insufficient to convey execution information to users. The devices feature a robust rigid copper core and iron core structure, capable of operating at high temperatures up to +105 °C, meeting the high reliability requirements of demanding applications. The automotive-grade IHPT1411AFELR73ABA, compliant with AEC-Q200 standards, is suitable for automotive dashboards and center consoles, providing haptic feedback for electronic gear shifters, steering wheels, seats, and other in-vehicle control systems. Typical applications for IHPT1207AGELR39AB0, IHPT1710ACEL1R2AB0, IHPT1411AFELR73AB0, and IHPT1614ACEL2R7BB0 include factory automation and control systems, consumer appliances, entertainment and health devices, as well as medical, defense, avionics, and studio audio equipment. Due to licensing restrictions, the actuators cannot be used in gaming applications.

The electromagnetic devices operate at a rated voltage as low as 12 V, eliminating the need for additional high-voltage circuitry required by other technologies. As a result, the IHPT series products are more cost-effective than comparable technologies such as linear resonant, linear wideband, eccentric rotating mass, and piezoelectric actuators. They also reduce component height and offer higher force density. The devices come bundled with Immersion licenses, eliminating the need to purchase separate licenses for complex haptic effects, thereby simplifying the design process and further reducing costs.

Under 12 V and 5 ms pulse conditions, IHPT actuators can drive a 0.5 kg load to achieve 6 g acceleration. The drive coil inductance is 1.8 mH, with a typical DC resistance (DCR) of 0.95 Ω, and the insulation voltage between the coil and the magnetic core is 150 VDC. The devices comply with RoHS and Vishay Green Standards, are halogen-free, and feature 100% tin-dipped solderable lead terminations. Vishay can customize actuator dimensions, shapes, core materials, winding counts, termination types, and performance to meet any design specification.
